Bangkok - PTT Plc sought new natural gas sources to meet increasing gas demand in the future though the electricity consumption did not grow much.

Electricity consumption growth was estimated at 3% this year.

The use of natural gas for power generation dropped. The natural gas demand remained at 770 million cubic feet per day.

However, the natural gas demand would rise to 6,200 million cubic feet per day in the next twelve years.

Increasing natural gas demand was due to economic growth.

Thailand produced up to 76% of natural gas, and natural gas sources are in the Gulf of Thailand.

24% were imported from neighboring countries such as Myanmar.

Gas demand at gas separation plants would hike to 19% while industrial sector’s demand would reach 16%.

It was expected Thailand would import up to 500 million cubic feet per day of natural gas from the JDA in 2010.

About 1-2 million tons per year of LNG would be imported for domestic consumption in 2011.
