Bangkok - Former deputy prime minister and chief negotiator with the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) Gen Chavalit Yongchaiyudh said a coup was the only choice to end political turmoil.
Gen Chavalit resigned from his posts after the police cracked down the protesters in front of parliament leaving two dead and more than 400 injured.
"After the military steps in, power should be immediately returned to the people and an interim government can be formed in which every party takes part," Chavalit said.
Army chief Gen Anupong Paochinda previously confirmed that the military would not stage a coup and would stay neutral.
However Chavalit said the military could quickly step aside after a coup with the appointment of a new premier and cabinet "who represent all sectors of society,” according to AFP.
This morning, seven leaders of the PAD except Chaiwat Sinsuwong and Chamlong Srimuang surrendered to police at Nang Lerng police station.
The Central Administrative Court issued an injunction preventing the police from using any violent measures against the demonstrators.
