Bangkok (ASTV Manager Online) – The southern unrest will not develop into a crusade after the Monday’s massacre, according to the defence ministry.
Gunmen attacked the mosque in Narathiwat on June 8, killing ten and injured twelve more people.
Gen Pravit Wongsuwan said it was the unexpected event, confirming the internal security unit did its best.
Although officials tried to control the situation and bring peace back to people in the area, it was not easy to prevent such event from happening.
A special cabinet for five southern provinces was set up by the Abhisit government to properly develop the areas.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will today chair a special cabinet meeting to discuss the situation.
Gen Pravit said Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban would be safe when making a trip to the south on Saturday June 13.
The southern unrest has occurred since January 2004.
More than 3,700 people have been killed and thousands more have been injured during the five-year insurgency
