As schools open, more and more parents begin to feel the pinch

Bangkok (ASTV Manager Online) – Most of the parents have got decreasing income while their expenses keep going up, according to a survey.

Bangkok University surveyed 1,073 respondents on April 28-29. Respondents were parents in Bangkok, and their children studied at kindergartens or high schools.

Most parents said their expenses exceeded incomes.

Up to 53.5 percent experienced a financial problem. 21.7 percent of this group has just been in trouble this semester whereas 31.8 percent used to be in trouble before.

32 percent admitted that decreasing income caused the financial problem while 19.8 percent said the problem was because of expensive school equipment, and 11.6 percent thought it was due to increasing tuition fee.

To cope with the problem, 18.2 percent would borrow money from their relatives, friends and acquaintances, whereas 16.1 percent would rely on savings, and 12.3 percent would go for illegal sources of loan.

11.5 percent would find a second job to earn extra money to cover their expenses while 10.6 percent would turn to pawnshops.

62.5 percent thought it’s worthy to invest in education whereas 8.9 percent did not think so and 28.6 percent were uncertain.
