Bangkok (Manager Online) - The death toll was 335 between December 30, 2008 and January 3, 2009 while the number of injured people reached 3,810 and the number of road accidents rose to 3,549.

Chiang Rai had the highest number of dead people, followed by Nakhon Ratchasima, Nakhon Sawan, Bangkok and Phitsanulok.

The highest number of road accidents was also in Chiang Rai, followed by Nakhon Ratchasima, Surin and Phetchabun.

Injured people were the highest in Nakhon Ratchasima.

Nine provinces were said to have no dead people while there was no road accident in Yasothorn.

Accidents were mostly caused by liquor (33.42%) and speeding (28.53%).

85.22% of the road accidents happened with motorcycles, and most of the dead and injured people were teenagers aged less than 25 years.

About 1.5 million people have used the train services during the New Year’s Festival, according to the State Railway of Thailand (SRT).

Transport Minister Sophon Saram said the transport ministry was content with the bus operators’ service since no passenger had to wait for 5-8 hours to get the service.

Thai people reportedly traveled more on their cars because of decreasing oil prices.
