Bangkok - Concerns over liquor drinkers aged less than 10 years were expressed by the government. The ‘National No Liquor Day’ was announced to be on the Buddhist Lent day.
The government announced there would be no liquor drinking on the Buddhist Lent day to support the good tradition and reduce the number of liquor drinkers.
The government and private sector as well as the general public were urged to join the campaign.
More than 16 million Thai people were liquor drinkers, according to a survey.
2,400 million litres per year of liquor was consumed by Thais, and 187 billion baht were spent on drinking annually.
Up to 4.7% of the liquor drinkers were less than 10 years old. It is possible they will become future drinkers.
