Bangkok - The old taxi fares are still used by some taxi drivers as they are afraid the number of passengers will drop after the fare increase, according to a survey.
The new fares are effective since July 3.
The fare is 35 baht for the first kilometer. The fare will hike five baht in the 2nd-11th kilometers, and rise more 5.50 baht in the 12-20 kilometers.
About 3,000 out of 70,000 taxis have already installed the new calculating meters to use new fares.
The installation charge is 380-700 baht per taxi.
Four companies offer the installation service. But five more firms will be able to give their service this week.
The land transport department asked for cooperation from the Kasetsart University, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Ladkrabang, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi and Mahanakon University to install the meters.
The installation costs 200 baht per taxi for this group of service providers.
It will take about one month for all taxis’ meter installation if these universities agree to offer the service.
