Bangkok - Bangkok suffers more as the new taxi fares are effective today.
Taxi drivers must have their meters updated at certified companies before charging the passengers the new rates.
A typical cab ride will rise about 12 percent.
The base fare is still 35 baht for the first kilometer but the meter will tick higher more quickly.
The fare will be 1.50 baht per minute in case the traffic jams and the taxi can’t move more than six kilometers per hour.
Most taxis in Bangkok run on natural gas, sparing them the impact of soaring oil prices.
It is the first time the taxi fares have increased in sixteen years.
