Bangkok - Six rice dealers agreed to cut the price of their bagged jasmine (Hommali) and white rice, according to Internal Trade Department.
Mr. Yanyong Puangraj, director-general of the Internal Trade Department, revealed six private rice dealers: Maboonkrong, Kaset, Lisa , Hong Thong, Dokbua and Carrefour Rice would reduce the price of their white and jasmine rice.
The price of jasmine and white rice will be 139-189 and 95-148 baht per five-kilogram bag respectively.
They are available at all Carrefour outlets nationwide. The price cut is to help reduce people’s cost of living burden.
There are currently about 1.9 million tons of rice in stock, according to the inspection.
Driven by the international demand, the rice price soared 50% last month.
Thai farmers are expected to benefit from the situation as Vietnam and India limit their exports to ensure domestic supply.
Jasmine rice is a long-grain variety of rice which has a nutty aroma and a subtle and pandan-like flavor.
Being originally from Thailand, jasmine rice was discovered as the Kao Hommali 105 variety (KDML105) by Sunthorn Seehanern, an official of the ministry of agriculture in the Chachoengsao province in 1954.
