Bangkok - Proper measures need to be taken to handle the domestic rice stock to prevent rice hoard, according to Commerce Minister Mingkwan Saengsuwan.

Mr. Mingkwan said Thailand was the first biggest rice exporter last year, followed by India and Vietnam who faced the weather problem.

It is expected Thailand will have more than 50% market share.

It is estimated there will be 20.5 million tons of rice this year. 11 million tons will be for the domestic consumption while 9.5 million tons for export.

The cabinet approved measures to tackle the domestic rice consumption. Commerce, Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry and National Rice Policy Committee were assigned to closely keep up with the rice situation.

There will be 6.5 and 4.29 million tons of unmilled rice and rice in the new harvesting season.

A sub-committee will be set up to manage the measures to prevent rice hoard, including packing to sell rice to Thai people at the cost price.
