Bangkok - The National Energy Policy Committee approved an MoU to buy 1,473 megawatts of electricity from Laos Hongsa Lignite project starting in 2013.

The Hongsa Lignite project’s contract lasts for 25 years.

The contract was signed between Thailand’s Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand and Banpu Power.

Major shareholders include Banpu Plc (40%), RATCH (40%) and Laotian government (20%).

A new sub-station will be built in Nan province as well as the 500-kilovolt power transmission line.

The transmission line is to link the Hongsa Lignite power plant with a sub-station in Nan and Mae Moh sub-station.

This power purchase deal is part of the 7,000-megawatt power power plan from Laos by 2015.

Thailand is currently engaged in four power projects with Laos: Theun-Hinboun, Huay Hoh, Nam Theun 2 and Nam Ngeum 2.
