The crew of a Winnipeg police helicopter was red-faced Tuesday after accidentally broadcasting their sexually explicit conversation during a routine patrol over the Canadian city to shocked and amused citizens below.

According to a police statement, at around 9:30 pm Monday (0200 GMT) the officers had "inadvertently activated the aircraft's public address system."

"As a result, the flight crew's conversation was publicly broadcast," it said.

Residents of the western plains city immediately went on Twitter to poke fun at the officers, prompting the event to trend on social media in the region.

"Does the #Winnipeg chopper realize the entire West End can hear their convo about blow jobs right now," posted Natanielle Felicitas, who was reportedly enjoying a nice evening in her backyard when she overheard the voices from the sky.

"It was a hilarious and inappropriate human blooper moment... too bizarre not to share," she later told public broadcaster CBC.

Another bemused resident said he could make out only a few words in the conversation as the helicopter flew overhead: "Too much body hair."

Because of the loud noise generated by the aircraft's engine and propeller, the officers had no idea at first that their workplace chat could be overheard. When they finally realized it they shut off the speaker system.

Constable Jason Michalyshen apologized on behalf of the helicopter crew for the blooper during a media briefing and in a statement, saying "some content of the conversation was inappropriate."

The incident was being reviewed, he added.
