‘ออสเตรเลีย’มุ่งสู่‘ศตวรรษของเอเชีย’
รัฐบาลออสเตรเลียเพิ่งออกเอกสารสมุดปกขาวฉบับหนึ่ง ซึ่งระบุอย่างชัดเจนว่า ให้ความสำคัญทั้งทางเศรษฐกิจและทางยุทธศาสตร์แก่ประเทศในเอเชียและชาวเอเชียเพิ่มมากขึ้น อย่างไรก็ตาม ทั้งๆ ที่แคนเบอร์ราได้ล่าถอยออกจากนโยบาย “ออสเตรเลียผิวขาว” มานานหลายสิบปีแล้ว แต่เอกสารฉบับนี้ก็ยังคงแสดงให้เห็นถึงการขาดความใส่ใจในเรื่องวิธีการสร้างความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างออสเตรเลียกับเอเชียชนิดที่จะเอื้อประโยชน์ให้แก่ทั้งสองฝ่าย แทนที่จะปฏิบัติต่อเอเชียเพียงแค่เป็นสถานที่สำหรับ “หาเงินหาทอง” เท่านั้น
