February 5, 2010
BANGKOK (AFP) - Thai police said Friday they had arrested three men suspected of trafficking 370,000 stimulant pills worth more than three million dollars.

After receiving a tip-off from an informant, police picked up the men, aged 18, 29 and 34, in Bangkok on Thursday afternoon with 100,000 amphetamine pills, known locally as "ya baa".

Police later seized a further 270,000 pills at the suspects' rented house, bringing the total street value of the haul to 111 million baht (3.34 million dollars), they said.

The suspects are from a hill tribe in the far north of Thailand, close to the border with Myanmar.

They were charged with drug trafficking, which officially carries the death penalty, although executions are rare.
