The activists were marking the 47th anniversary of Yangon university Students' Union building which was destroyed by General Ne Win and his followers in 1962.
General Ne Win cracked down on a student strike by violently occupying the Yangon University campus with his troops.
During a raid on July 7, 1962, hundreds of students were either killed or put behind bars and the Student Union Building was demolished.
