Bangkok (ASTV Manager Online) – Chulalongkorn University’s academic planned to propose the issue of the occurrence of tsunami in the Gulf of Thailand at today’s meeting.
Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Science studied the occurrence of tsunami in Thailand based on the mathematical model.
The AVI-NAMI program was used to calculate the movement of tsunami caused by earthquakes.
It is possible the Gulf of Thailand will experience tsunami coming from the west of Luzon Island in the Philippines.
Earthquakes have often happened at Luzon Island due to earth crust under such area.
According to the study, tsunami can take place in the Gulf of Thailand. However, waves will become less powerful because of shallow current.
Waves will averagely be one metre high, and warning can be issued at least 8-14 hours before tsunami really occur.
Thai people were urged to be careful and get ready for tsunami.
