Bangkok - Only 31% of Thailand’s toilets were up to standard. Most of them were at department stores and hospitals, according to public health ministry.
A meeting was held on October 29 to set strategies to develop public toilets in Thailand during 2009-2011.
The public health ministry campaigned for clean public toilets at government offices, temples, bus terminals, petrol stations, wet markets, tourist attractions, schools and restaurants nationwide.
The campaign has started since 2005, targeting to raise the number of clean toilets to 60%.
Only 15,818 of 51,025 surveyed public toilets were up to standard in September 2008.
Standard toilets were at department stores (79%), hospitals (66%), tourist attractions (51%), bus terminals (44%), and public parks and wet markets (40%) respectively.
The Department of Health would join the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) to improve toilets at railway stations and on trains.
The department plans to make 1-7 April of each year a week to campaign standard toilets.
