Bangkok - The Miss International Queen 2008 has been put off indefinitely due to political turmoil in Thailand.

The transvestite pageant was scheduled to take place this month in the beach resort of Pattaya.

The contest was postponed for a month because of the political situation.

The Organizing Committee put off the event because some contestants were hesitant to travel to join the competition in Thailand.

"It is with regret that Tiffany's Show Pattaya is postponing the Miss International Queen 2008 pageant until further notice," said organiser Alisa Phanthusak.

Two people were killed and nearly 500 were injured in violent clashes between police and People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) demonstrators in front parliament on October 7.

The contest normally attracts transvestites around the world to compete for a 10,000-dollar cash prize as well as fame and acceptance.

A Thai beauty queen won the contest last year, with Brazilian and Philippine runners-up.

If the Organizing Committee were not able to host the contest, all participants who have already signed up and paid would see their registration automatically roll over for next year.
