“La La Land” หนังเพลงของ ผกก. “เดเมียน ชาแซล” ที่สร้างขึ้นเพื่อรำลึกถึงยุคทองแห่งวงการเพลงอเมริกัน คือ งานที่ได้ชิงรางวัลลูกโลกทองคำมากที่สุดใน 7 สาขารวมถึง ภาพยนตร์ตลก/เพลง และนักแสดงนำทั้งสองคน นอกจากนั้นหนังซูเปอร์ฮีโร Deadpool ก็มีชื่อชิงรางวัลใหญ่ 2 สาขาด้วย
โดยหนังที่ได้ชิงรางวัลมากสาขาในลำดับรองลงไป ประกอบไปด้วย Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea และ Florence Foster Jenkins ที่ได้ลุ้นรางวัล 6 สาขาเท่ากัน
สมาคมผู้สื่อข่าวต่างประเทศแห่งฮอลลีวูด ได้ประกาศรางชื่อหนังชิงรางวัลลูกโลกทองคำในปีนี้ออกมาแล้ว สำหรับสาขาหนังดรามานั้นยังมีผู้เข้าชิงอย่าง Hacksaw Ridge หนังสงครามของ เมล กิบสัน, หนังทริลเลอร์ Hell or High Water และ Lion กับ Manchester by the Sea ที่เป็นหนังครอบครัว ส่วน Moonlight หนังที่ว่าด้วยการเติบโตก้าวพ้นวัยก็ได้ชิงรางวัลใหญ่ในสาขานี้ด้วย
ส่วนสาขาหนังตลก หรือเพลงมีตัวเต็งอย่าง La La Land ชิงรางวัลกับ Florence Foster Jenkin, 20th Century Women และ Sing Street รวมถึงหนังซูเปอร์ฮีโร Deadpool ที่นอกจากจะได้ชิงรางวัลหนังตลก/เพลงยอดเยี่ยมแล้ว นักแสดงนำ ไรอัน เรย์โนลด์ ก็ยังมีชื่อได้ชิงรางวัลในสาขานี้ด้วย
ด้านรางวัลด้านงานทางโทรทัศน์ เป็นมินิซีรีส์ The People v, O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story ที่ชิงรางวัล 5 สาขา ส่วน The Night Manager มีชื่อชิงรางวัล 4 สาขา และ The Crown, The Night Of, This is Us และ Westworld ชิง 3 สาขา
ลูกโลกทองคำจะมีความแตกต่างจากรางวัลทางภาพยนตร์ใหญ่ในฮอลลีวูด อย่าง ออสการ์ และ SAG ตรงที่ เวทีนี้จะตัดสินรางวัลจากการลงคะแนนของสื่อมวลชน ขณะที่ ออสการ์ และ SAG จะเป็นการลงคะแนนกันเองในหมู่สมาชิกของอุตสาหกรรมภาพยนตร์ฮอลลีวูด โดยลูกโลกทองครั้งครั้งที่ 74 จะมีขึ้นในวันที่ 8 ม.ค. และ จิมมี เฟลลอน จะรับหน้าที่ดำเนินรายการ
