Dear Prime Minister Vejjajiva
Demand Thai Government drop charges against trade union and PAD leaders
The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) has informed us about the summons recently issued by Thai police against trade union leaders and PAD supporters. Many of the union leaders summonsed are from ITF affiliated-organisations. The Pan-Hellenic Seamen's Federation, as a member of ITF, would like to express its deep concern.
We understand that the charges are grossly exaggerated - including a charge that carries death penalty- since no physical damage was caused by the airport occupations and the only violence was the throwing of a grenade - not by PAD supporters, but by supporters of Thaksin Shinawatra.
Our Union fully supports the rights of its members to engage in legitimate and peaceful protest action and would strongly urge you to intervene so that the charges made are withdrawn.
We sincerely hope this situation can be resolved rapidly in the interests of social justice within your country.
Yours sincerely
John Halas
General Secretary, PNO
