After months of mass protests against regime and amid a widening exodus of citizens to the West via Hungary, thousands of East Berliners on November 9, 1989 started streaming towards checkpoints leading to West Berlin, few hours after an East German official announced a decree stating that visas would be freely granted to those wanting to travel outside or leave the state land.
