- January 1: NEW YORK - Antonio Guterres becomes the United Nations' new secretary general.
- January 20: UNITED STATES - Donald Trump is inaugurated as the 45th US president.
- March 31: BRITAIN - Date by which Prime Minister Theresa May has pledged to invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, the first step in leaving the European Union.
- April 23: FRANCE - First round of the presidential election (second round on May 7).
- May 19: IRAN - Presidential election.
- August 4: BRITAIN - World athletics championships in London (through August 13).
- August 8: KENYA - Presidential election.
- September 13: PERU - The International Olympic Committee to designate a host city for the 2024 Olympic Games.
- September/October: GERMANY - Legislative elections.
- November 6: GERMANY - COP23 environmental summit under Fiji presidency in Bonn (through 17).
