February 27, 2014
BOGOTA (AFP) - Four people were killed and 10 injured Wednesday by a strong blast that tore through a supermarket in western Colombia, local authorities said.

"The daughter of the store's owner was among the dead, along with three employees," said General Rodolfo Palomino, head of the national police.

The attack took place in the town of Quibdo, capital of Choco province, on the border with Panama.

Officials believe the explosion was caused by a package bomb left at the store late Tuesday.

Palomino said he believes the bombing was carried out by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, (FARC), a leftist group with between 7,000 and 8,000 rebels under arms.

The FARC, which has been battling the government for a half-century, has been in peace talks with Bogota for more than a year, but continues its armed attacks in the absence of a ceasefire agreement.

Palomino said police also are investigating the possible involvement of another armed group, los Urabenos.

That group, made up of former rightwing paramilitaries, is one of Colombia's most feared drug trafficking organizations.
