Bangkok (AFP) - Nude Peta girls showered on a sidewalk in Holllywood, California on March 22, 2011 to mark the World Water Day 2011.
This year, the impact of uncertainties caused by climate change, conflicts and natural disasters on urban water systems was focused. The impact of industrialization and rapid urban population growth were highlighted as well.
A world's population of 3.3 billion lives in cities and the urban landscapte continues to grow. The city populations grow faster than city infrastructure can serve (as cited at http://www.unwater.org).
38 percent of city population growth can be seen in expanding slums. The event was held under the theme of Water for cities: responding to the urban challenge, aims to spotlight and encourage governments, organizations, communities, and individuals to actively engage in addressing the challenges of urban water management.
The event falls on March 22 every year, based on the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro (as cited at http://www.worldwaterday.org).
