January 22, 2011
SINGAPORE (AFP) - Passengers on Singapore Airlines (SIA) will pay more to fly from next week after the carrier said Friday it will raise fuel surcharges because of the rising cost of jet fuel.

The increases, which the carrier said will also apply to its regional wing SilkAir -- will range from $3 to $27 depending on the distance and class of travel.

"Singapore Airlines will increase its fuel surcharges for tickets issued on or after 27 January 2011 as a result of the recent sharp and sustained escalation in the price of jet fuel," it said.

The adjustment "will offer only partial relief from the higher operating costs arising from increases in the price of jet fuel", SIA said, adding it will continue to closely monitor the price movements.

Jet fuel is now above $110 per barrel, the firm added.
