SEOUL (AFP) - Four South Koreans who have been detained in North Korea had crossed the border illegally from China, a Seoul activist told AFP Friday.

The communist state earlier said it was holding four South Koreans for illegal entry but gave no details.

The four crossed the border between China's Tumen city and Namyang in the North several days ago, said activist Choi Sung-Yong, quoting informants in China.
