TOKYO (AFP) - A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck off southern Japan on Monday, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, and no tsunami warning was issued, government agencies said.
The quake struck at 4:15 pm (0715 GMT) at a depth of 58 kilometres (36 miles) below the sea floor, 104 kilometres southeast of Kyushu island's Kagoshima prefecture, said the US Geological Survey in a preliminary report.
Around 20 percent of the world's most powerful earthquakes strike Japan.
