BANGKOK (AFP) - Thai auto sales were up by nearly a quarter in November -- the biggest year-on-year growth for more than four years, the industry said Wednesday.

Vehicle sales rose 23.8 percent to 57,031 units as the country's economy recovered from the global slowdown, Toyota Motor Thailand said in its monthly release.

The agricultural sector in particular boosted commercial vehicle sales, rising 18.2 percent to 32,977 units, while passenger car sales jumped 32.3 percent to 24,054 units.

"It's the third consecutive month of growth and the highest growth in 53 months," the statement said.

Despite the rise, sales for first eleven months of the year contracted 14.3 percent from the same period in 2008 to 476,786 units.

But Toyota revised the yearly target to a higher figure of 520,000 units as it predicted sales would further rise in December, thanks to attractive promotions and the introduction of new models.
