BANGKOK (AFP) - Thailand's national carrier Thai Airways International said Wednesday it has signed a code-sharing agreement with Bahrain-based Gulf Air to meet rising demand for air travel.

The pact covers flights from Bangkok to Bahrain and Muscat, the capital of Oman, and allows Gulf Air to code share on Thai flights from Bangkok to Thailand's holiday isle of Phuket and the popular northern city of Chiang Mai.

Gulf Air operates daily flights Bahrain-Bangkok and four flights from the Thai capital to Muscat. The Middle Eastern airliner is owned by Bahrain, Oman, and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

Code sharing allows an airline to put its identification code on the flights of another airline and so enlarges their network of flights and destinations.
