BANGKOK (AFP) - A power failure briefly trapped commuters inside carriages on board Bangkok's new subway Monday, the fifth incident since two trains collided and injured 200 people in January, officials said.

Several hundred commuters were aboard during morning rush hour when their north-bound train toward Bang Sue stopped at Rama 9 station because of a power failure that lasted almost an hour and kept doors closed.

No one was injured when passengers escaped onto the platform through the emergency doors. Rail authorities are investigating the cause of the power outage.

It is the fifth interruption to hit the eight month-old subway system since two trains crashed on January 17, injuring 200 commuters.

A signalling failure in late February shut down two stations on the 20-kilometre (12.4 mile) system for two hours and forced an evacuation.

Two other power outages have forced the subway to suspend service in recent months.

The 3.5 billion dollar subway has been struggling to attract passengers since opening in July.
