BANGKOK, Feb 24, 05 (Manager Daily) – Japan’s electronic giant, Toshiba, plans to invest THB400 million to produce its LCD and Plasma TVs in Thailand for domestic high-end market.
Toshiba Thailand’s vice-president and director, Natthapong Areekul, said the Kingdom would become the company’s production base if the products do well in this local market.
Toshiba is among several other Japanese companies moving their production bases from Thailand to other countries due to high duty on raw materials.
Toshiba moved its television manufacturing base to Malaysia two years ago, while the production here focuses on household electrical appliances, said Mr Natthapong.
Big screen LCD and Plasma TVs are used by Thai enterprises to promote products and services. Consumers are turning from projection TVs to Plasma TVs too, Mr Natthapong said.
Some THB300-400 million in budget fund was set aside for marketing this year under the sport-marketing concept. This is hoped to help increase 10% of its annual sale this year.
Toshiba also entered the MP3 market in Thailand for the first time this year.
