BANGKOK (Manager Daily)- Thailand’s Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said on Monday there will be no sudden 180 degree change in economic and social policies in his new administration, but to push the country’s economic growth to a better level from its supply side.
Dr Thaksin, who led ruling Thai Rak Thai party to win landslide for a second term in Sunday’s election, said that people the public should not expect too much change in the policies of the new cabinet, but some of policies were due for ‘fine-tunes’.
He said his first term had achieved an early success in stimulating the economy from the demand side; the second term would focus more on the supply side.
The TRT leader said the new government would continue to give emphasis on economic policies to address people's problems from the grassroots level. The main objectives include poverty eradication, land right allotment, and debt restructuring for people.
Moreover, he said, the next 4 years would also see the expansion of the public transport systems, which include the sky-train and underground rail transport, in order to solve the horrendous traffic in the Thai capital Bangkok.
Privatization of state enterprises will also be on agenda as to help increase the efficiency and accountability in the management. However, the government would still hold the major stakeholder in the privatized state owned companies, he said.
The prime minister said he was considering filling the new cabinet with new faces; only about one half of the incumbent cabinet members would stay in office while the rest would be in the party’s backup team.
However, it is the most likely that Dr Somkid Jatusripitak, the finance minister who has led the government’s economic team in the first term, will remain in the new economic administration team.
The prime minister said the results of Sunday’s election came out as no surprise, though better than expected.
Thanking all the voters, Dr Thaksin vowed to work harder and move faster during his second term. "I'm now more experienced, and I believe I can do what I have promised to the public", the prime minister said.
