KRABI (Manager Daily)- About 400 more bodies, mainly of foreigners, were transported to mainland Tuesday afternoon, from what a few days ago was one of the most popular destinations among vacationers from around the globe.

The latest number brought the death toll up to 800- from Phi Phi Islands - that was hard hit by Sunday’s ocean waves unleashed by a 8.9-magnitude earthquake in the Andaman Sea southwest of Indonesia’s Sumatra Island.

The bodies arrived at around 04:00pm on Marine police patrol boats, and local service boats that used to ferry tourists to island resorts off Thailand’s Andaman coast.

According to Krabi officials, the autopsies will be conducted at the city’s deep seaport; the bodies will be kept at Ta Chatchai Cemetery in nearby Phuket's Thalang district.

However, an ITV reporter covering the scene from Krabi Harbour said during the network’s 05:45pm newsbreak, said more than 100 bodies are waiting back in Phi Phi, as the wave death toll there keeps going up.

Police boats had transported nearly 200 bodies to mainland Krabi when darkness fell on Monday. More bodies were discovered since rescue workers resumed earlier Tuesday morning combing wreckages of houses, restaurants, huts and hotels used to line up Phi hi shore.

Dozens of dead bodies were recovered from mud, some from water pools, said rescue workers.

More than 600 survivors were transported to mainland on Monday, according to Police Lieutenant-Colonel Prasert Srikhunrat of Phuket Marine Police Unit, who supervises the boat transport.

He said Phi Phi Islands were seriously damaged by Sunday’s tidal waves.

“There are not any longer beer bar, restaurant, shop and guesthouse on beaches,” said the police officer.
“It’s all gone with the waves,” he said.
