BANGKOK (Manager Daily)- More than 100 tourists, out of some 1,000 from Russia, have gone missing in Phuket, said the commander of Tourist Police Division, Major-General Panya Mamen.

He said about 1,000 or more Russians were in Phuket when the island was hit by a series of ocean waves Sunday morning. The waves have killed more than 1,000 people, mainly foreign vacationers, in provinces along Thailand’s Andaman coast, according to official counts.

The commander said Tourist Police had asked local people for clues of the missing tourists.

Thailand’s Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said Monday afternoon 600-700 people or even more had died in Pang Nga’s Takua Pa district, fewer than 200 kilometres north of Phuket, when the waves swept away beachside houses, restaurants, huts and tourist resorts lining up the hilly shore.

At least 1 Tourist Police officer died in Phuket’s Patong beach, another in Phi Phi Islands, when the waves ravaged the areas late Sunday morning, said Maj-Gen. Panya.
