KHON KAEN (Manager Daily) – More than 300 rais (49 hectares) of an Army unit in this northeastern province will be used to house the country’s newest inland containers depot (ICD) with a construction cost of more than 500 million baht and to take 3 years to complete.
The ICD service is expected to start in mid-2009, said Panakritsana Klangboonkrong, who heads the feasibility study of the ICD project.
He said the provincial authority is asking for 12.5 million baht in government budget to fund engineering designing and environmental impact studies.
The project will be located on a 323-rai plot of land belonging to the Marny's 2nd Veterinary Division. The area can be expanded in the future when the services grow. Parking lots and central facility areas are expected to cover the majority of the land piece.
According to the plan, there will be initially 2 sub-stations to serve containers of goods. The sub-stations will have a combined capacity to hold some 12,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) per year, said Dr. Panakritsana.
The investment on the ICD has a yielding prospect of about 26.38%- which is well financially viably– as the construction cost is around 565.4 million baht, the lowest compared to 713.5 and 852.4 million baht on other locations in the same province, he said.
Khon Kaen is the best location to host the ICD in line with the government’s policy to make Thailand a logistics centre in the region- in light of the development of the East-West Economic Corridor road links across the Kingdom from Myanmar to Vietnam to be completed in 2006.
When in operation, the Khon Kaen ICD will play an important role in land transport of merchandises among local provinces as well as neighbouring countries, Dr. Panakritsana said.
“Several agencies including the State Railway of Thailand, the Ports Authority of Thailand as well as business companies are keen to operate the Khon Kaen ICD,” he said.
